As the temperature drops, taking care of our furry friends is important. Here are some essential winter wellness tips to ensure your pets stay healthy and cozy this season:
Keep Them Warm
Bring Pets Indoors: If it’s too cold for you, it's too cold for your pet. Keep them inside where it's warm and cozy.
Provide Shelter: If your pets must stay outside, ensure they have a dry, draft-free shelter. Raise the floor a few inches off the ground and cover it with cedar shavings or straw.
Use Pet Coats and Sweaters: Short-haired pets can benefit from wearing coats or sweaters to keep them warm.
Protect Their Paws
Wipe Paws After Walks: After walks, wipe your pet’s paws with a warm towel to warm them up after cold rainy walks. If you are in an area to get snow… wipe their paws with a warm damp towel to remove ice, salt, and chemicals.
Use Paw Balms: Apply paw balms to protect their paw pads from salt and chemicals.
Consider Booties: Dog booties can provide extra protection for your pet’s paws during walks.
Maintain Hygiene
Keep Ears Clean: Check and clean your pet’s ears regularly to prevent infections.
Moisturize: When you bathe your pets, use moisturizing shampoos and conditioners. Not adjusting your winter bath routine can strip your pet’s skin and coat of essential oils. Make sure if you’re bathing your pets that you make the switch or book your pet’s spa appointment with us and we’ll do the work and adjustments for you.
Safety Precautions
Avoid Antifreeze: Clean up any antifreeze spills immediately as it is lethal for pets. Consider using antifreeze products containing propylene glycol instead of ethylene glycol.
Check for Frostbite: Be aware of signs of frostbite, such as pale or gray skin, and contact your vet if you suspect your pet has it.
Emergency Preparedness
Emergency Kit: Have an emergency kit ready with food, water, medicine, and any prescription medications. Include heartworm and flea/tick preventatives.
Stay visible: Use reflective gear or lights on your pet’s collar or leashes when you walk them during darker hours.
Hydration is Key:
Even in colder weather, pets need plenty of water. Make sure their water bowls are always filled with fresh water.
Maintain Regular Exercise:
Keep your pets active with indoor play sessions to prevent weight gain and boredom.
Check for Safety Hazards:
Ensure your home is free from dangerous winter plants and decorations that pets might chew on.
Watch Their Diet:
Adjust your pet’s diet if they are less active during the winter to avoid weight gain.
Regular Vet Visits:
Schedule regular check-ups to keep your pets in top health.
By following these tips, you can help ensure your pets stay safe, comfortable, healthy, and happy during the winter months.
